Shopping Trolley Art
I remember when you could find shopping trolleys everywhere, not just supermarket car-parks but ditches, ponds, lakes, I found one on the top of a hill near Glastonbury once, now that must’ve taken some dedication. I lived in Bristol years ago and when I was on the dole I’d take a trip to shopping hell in Bedminster, every supermarket there had stolen trollies from each other lol. Nowadays they’re all chained up and take a quid deposit to get your hands on one, well that’s the story in the UK.
So let’s take a trip back in time and check out the sort of public action that made sure the supermarkets cleared up their act. Ptolemy Erlington is one guy who really excelled at “shopping trolley art” but he’s moved on these days, still recycling materials for his sculptures at Hubcap Creatures. I’ve added a piece by Frank Schreiner too, it’s called “Consumers Rest” and was created in 1983. I’ve had an idea of my own for a shopping trolley sculpture for years now but it all comes down to space, and I don’t have a garage to create mine, still, there’s always hope. I’ve also found a load more anonymous shopping trolley sculptures I thought you might like to see…
