Metropolis II – Chris Burden
Ex-performance artist, sculptor and cult of the L.A art scene Chris Burden wows the crowds again, this time with his reinterpretation of the classic dystopian flick and world’s most expensive silent flick Metropolis. Aptly named ‘Metropolis II’ Burden’s latest and most kinetic sculpture consists of 18 tracks, a whole heap of Art Deco inspired skyscrapers and 1100 toy cars zipping around at speeds of up to 240mph. approximately 100,000 cars circulate through the dense network of buildings. According to Burden, “The noise, the continuous flow of the trains, and the speeding toy cars, produces in the viewer the stress of living in a dynamic, active and bustling 21st Century city.” I doubt Fritz Lang had road rage at the top of his list when he made the original movie, but who knows, if he saw the price of fuel these days he might think differently.
