Killer Toys
Patricia Waller, a Chilean-born, German-based artist crochets soft plush toys. Sounds innocent enough? Wait until you seem them. If you’re of a certain generation you probably grew up on a diet of constantly repeated toons from the 1940′s and 1950′s, they must have been dirt cheap to air at the time. Throughout the 1970′s and 1980′s most kids, especially in Britain, were painfully familiar with all the characters from the Warner Bros. and Disney stable. However, there comes a time in every child’s life where they’d rather Tom eats Jerry, Wile E. Coyote finally entraps the Roadrunner, and that Daffy beats the crap out of Bugs just because he’s such a smarmy sod. I’m sure that’s just about the time when Patricia Waller first th0ught of creating her graphic violence soft toys.
“Due to the technique of crocheting – all my works are produced by myself in handicraft – and the selection of the subject-matter, my works seem harmless at first sight. But if you take a closer look, you will discover biting irony and a strong dose of nastiness.” says Patricia.
Her themes constantly play on our fears, be it of mortality and ageing in general, illness and disability. Certainly not the stuff of child’s play. One thing that will surprise many who visit her site is the scale she works to, for instance her shark piece is almost 6.5ft (2 meters) long. If you’re ready to see the demise of all your favourite cartoon heroes, accidents, violence, and death portrayed in graphic detail through the medium of wool, then check these out:
